Flowering

Flowering is where almost everybody starts, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is also the most conditional thing a plant does.

A bloom depends on three things going right. The flower buds have to survive the winter, which for marginal plants is not guaranteed. The plant has to not be pruned at the wrong time, because on spring bloomers the buds were set the previous summer and a late-winter cut removes them. And a hard frost has to stay away after the plant has broken dormancy, which at this elevation is a real roll of the dice on anything early.

Then there is duration. Most plants flower for two or three weeks. Choosing a plant primarily for its bloom is choosing it for about five percent of the year, and the other ninety-five percent is leaves, form and bare structure.

None of which argues against flowers. It argues for two checks. Spread the bloom across the season rather than loading everything into May, so something is always doing it. And make sure the planting still works when nothing is in flower — if it does, every bloom is a bonus rather than the thing holding the design up.
