Forsythia performs best in full sun for strongest flowering but tolerates light shade. It has medium water needs during establishment and benefits from occasional deep watering in dry periods. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering to maintain shape and encourage next year’s blooms, since it flowers on older wood. Fall dieback cutback is not recommended, as this can remove spring flower buds. Winter protection is generally not needed in Rocky Mountain climates.
