Delta County is the home base of our operations. The shop is on Austin Road and the crews leave from it every morning. This is not a service area we expanded into. It is where the trucks are parked.
The county sits at the foot of the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world, and it holds a wider mix of people than a county this size usually manages — farmers and orchardists, motorsports, hunting and fishing, and a real arts scene. Austin, Cedaredge, Crawford, Delta, Eckert, Hotchkiss, Orchard City and Paonia.
It is three valleys, not one place
Those towns are not interchangeable, and what separates them is not only character. It is ground.
The Surface Creek valley — Cedaredge, Eckert, Orchard City — sits up under the south slope of the Mesa and drinks off it. Highest in the county, shortest season, orchard country for well over a century.
The North Fork — Hotchkiss, Paonia, Crawford — runs east off the Gunnison toward Somerset. Its own drainage, its own water, and a valley growing fruit and wine grapes that have no business doing as well as they do at this elevation.
The bottom of the Uncompahgre — Delta and Austin — where the Uncompahgre runs into the Gunnison. That confluence is what the town is named for. Lowest, warmest, longest season, on Uncompahgre Project water out of the Gunnison Tunnel.
Delta sits at 4,961 feet. Cedaredge is at 6,231. That is close to thirteen hundred feet inside one county, and it turns up in the last frost, the first hard freeze, how long the mowing runs, and what comes through a winter without help.
Which is why the calendar is not the same everywhere
Sprinkler startup in the spring, weekly mowing through the summer, cleanups and blowouts in the fall. That is the year, and it is the same list of jobs in all eight towns. What moves is the timing.
The freeze reaches the Surface Creek valley before it reaches the valley floor, and a winterization route built the other way round costs somebody a split pipe. The first mow comes earlier in Delta than in Cedaredge. Knowing which is which across eight towns is most of what running routes in this county actually involves.
