Lilacs grow best in full sun and well-drained soil. They have medium water needs during establishment and benefit from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering to remove spent blooms and thin older stems, encouraging new growth and better flowering the following year. Avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, as buds form for next year’s blooms. Winter protection is generally not required in Rocky Mountain climates.
