Rose-of-Sharon is an upright flowering shrub that provides reliable late-summer blooms when many shrubs are finished flowering. Its hibiscus-like flowers appear in shades of white, pink, purple, and blue and add strong vertical interest to shrub borders and foundation beds. Its upright habit makes it useful for screening, back-of-bed structure, and accent planting where late-season color is needed.

Care Instructions

Rose-of-Sharon thrives in full sun and well-drained soil in an area sheltered from heavy wind. It has medium water needs during establishment and benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods. It blooms on new growth, so pruning can be done in early spring to shape and encourage flowering. Fall dieback cutback is not necessary and generally not recommended. Winter protection is typically not required in protected Rocky Mountain sites.
