Oregon grape performs best in full sun to partial sun, though it benefits from afternoon shade in hotter sites. It has low to medium water needs once established and tolerates dry conditions better than many broadleaf evergreens. Water consistently during establishment, then transition to deep, infrequent irrigation. Pruning can be done in early spring to thin older stems and maintain shape. Winter protection is usually not required in Rocky Mountain climates, though protection from extreme winter wind improves foliage appearance.
