Lighting is the one thing in a landscape that changes what the property is for. A yard with no light is finished at dusk. The same yard lit properly is somewhere people are still sitting at nine o'clock in September, which on this side of the divide is most of the evenings worth having.
It is also the shortest job we do. Most low-voltage systems go in over a day or two, on an existing landscape, with no demolition and very little disturbance — a trencher slit through turf closes up in a week. There is no other improvement that changes a property this much for this little disruption.
Three things get lit, and they are different jobs.
- Getting around after dark. Steps, grade changes, the walk from where people park to the door. This is the half nobody asks for and everybody uses, and it is the part that matters most on a property with a slope or a long drive.
- What the place looks like at night. Uplighting a mature tree, grazing a stone wall, washing the front of the house. Done well this is not more light — it is less light, aimed carefully, with the fixtures out of sight.
- Being able to use the space. Patio, outdoor kitchen, seating. Enough to eat by and talk by, and no more than that.
What separates a system that still looks right in year five is almost entirely in the parts that do not show. Fixtures live outside through winters here, under snow, through freeze and thaw and a lot of UV at this elevation. Brass and copper age and keep working; thin-wall aluminum and plastic fail at the lens seal and the socket, and they tend to fail in the second or third season, which is after anybody is still thinking about who installed them. The wire gauge and the transformer sizing decide whether the far end of a run is as bright as the near end, and that is a calculation, not a guess.
