Weigela

Weigela florida

Cultivars: 'Wine & Roses', 'Variegata', 'Minuet'

Weigela is a flowering shrub valued for its arching habit and late spring to early summer bloom. It produces clusters of tubular flowers in shades of pink, red, or white that attract pollinators and provide vibrant seasonal color. Many modern cultivars also feature burgundy or variegated foliage, adding interest beyond the bloom period. Its rounded, slightly spreading form makes it suitable for mixed shrub beds, foundation plantings, and accent locations where seasonal color is desired.

Care Instructions

Weigela grows best in full sun for strongest flowering and compact growth. It has low to medium water needs once established but benefits from regular watering during the first season. Pruning should be done after flowering to shape and remove older stems, encouraging fresh growth and future bloom. It does not require heavy annual pruning but responds well to periodic thinning. Winter protection is generally not required in Rocky Mountain landscapes.
