Broom prefers full sun and sharply drained soils. It has low water needs once established and performs best when not overwatered. Excess moisture or heavy soils can shorten its lifespan. Pruning should be done lightly after flowering to shape and maintain density. Avoid cutting back into old woody stems that lack green growth. Fall dieback cutback is not recommended. Leave stems intact through winter to protect the plant and preserve structure. Winter protection is generally advised unless drainage is excellent and the plant is sited in sun.
