Hornbeams perform best in full sun to partial sun and well-drained soils with consistent moisture. They have low water needs. Once established, they tolerate moderate drought but benefit from periodic deep watering. Pruning can be used to maintain shape or structure and is typically done in late winter. Winter protection is generally not necessary in Rocky Mountain climates when trees are properly established. Mulching during establishment helps retain soil moisture and support root development.
