Cottonwoods are fast-growing, large shade trees commonly found along waterways and open landscapes in the Rocky Mountain region. They develop tall, broad canopies with bright green leaves that shimmer in the wind, creating a distinctive visual effect. Because of their rapid growth and large mature size, they are best suited for parks, windbreaks, and larger properties rather than small residential yards. Their presence can create immediate shade and a strong naturalistic feel. Cultivars such as ‘Prairie Sky’ are often male selections used to reduce cottony seed production.

Care Instructions

Cottonwoods prefer full sun and moist, well-drained soils. Depending on location they have medium but sometimes high water needs and perform best with consistent moisture, particularly when young. While tolerant of wet soils, they also handle periodic drought once established. Pruning may be required to maintain structure and remove weak branches. Winter protection is not typically necessary. Because of their size and root systems, careful placement away from structures and utilities is important.
