Boxwood performs best in full sun to partial sun and well-drained soil. It has medium water needs during establishment and benefits from consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Deep watering during prolonged dry periods helps maintain healthy foliage. Pruning is typically done in late winter or early spring to shape and maintain density, with light touch-up shearing as needed during the growing season. Winter protection is advised in exposed Rocky Mountain sites, particularly to prevent winter burn, burlap wind screens and adequate fall watering are beneficial. Once it begins getting lower than 40 degrees during the night, stop watering until spring.
