Fernbush prefers full sun and sharply drained soil. It has low water needs once established and performs best with deep, infrequent irrigation rather than frequent watering. Water consistently the first season to establish roots, then reduce irrigation, too much moisture can lead to stress and weak growth. Pruning is minimal, typically limited to removing deadwood or lightly shaping in early spring. Fall dieback cutback is not required and usually not recommended, leaving stems intact through winter helps protect the crown and preserves structure. Winter protection is generally not necessary in Rocky Mountain climates, but good drainage is essential for winter survival.
