Summer Pruning

Not all pruning waits for winter. Summer pruning, done while trees and shrubs are in active growth, is the right tool for shaping, thinning, and controlling size — the cuts heal quickly, and you can see exactly what you're doing with the plant in full leaf.

We use summer pruning to open crowded canopies for light and airflow (which helps hold down disease in our climate), keep hedges and ornamentals in bounds, and clean up structure without the hard, growth-forcing cuts that belong in the dormant season.

Heavy structural work still waits for winter — but for shaping and maintenance through the season, summer is the time.
