Copper

At Brookstone Outdoors, we incorporate copper pipe and fittings into our projects for their exceptional quality and performance. Copper is revered in the landscaping and plumbing industries for its durability, resistance to corrosion, and excellent thermal conductivity, making it a top choice for both functional and aesthetic applications in outdoor settings.

Copper pipes are renowned for their longevity. They can last for decades, resisting the harsh elements of outdoor environments like soil, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. This durability means fewer replacements and repairs over time, offering a cost-effective solution in the long run. Our use of copper ensures that systems like irrigation, water features, and even decorative elements are built to last.

The fittings we use are designed to match the quality of copper piping, providing secure, leak-free connections. These can range from compression fittings for ease of installation to soldered joints for a more permanent solution. Copper fittings are versatile, allowing us to adapt to the unique requirements of each project, whether it's for a complex irrigation setup or a simple garden water spigot.

Beyond its practical benefits, copper brings an inherent beauty to any landscape design. Its natural, warm tone adds a touch of elegance to water features or can be left to develop a patina for a more rustic look. At Brookstone Outdoors, we understand that copper is not just about functionality; it's also about enhancing the visual appeal of your outdoor spaces. By choosing copper, we ensure that your landscape not only functions efficiently but also contributes to the overall aesthetic charm of your property.

Teammate Instructions

Team, here's how we manage copper pipe and fittings to maintain our high standards:

Handling Copper:
  • Careful Transport: Copper is malleable, so avoid bending or kinking pipes during transport or on-site. Use pipe cradles or racks to prevent damage.
Cutting and Preparation:
  • Cutting: Use a tubing cutter for clean, square cuts. If using a hacksaw, ensure you deburr the inside of the pipe afterward to prevent flow restrictions.
  • Cleaning: Before soldering, clean the ends of the pipe and inside of the fittings with emery cloth or a wire brush to remove any oxidation.
Soldering:
  • Flux Application: Apply flux to both the outside of the pipe and inside of the fitting. This helps the solder flow and creates a good seal.
  • Soldering Technique:
    • Heat the joint evenly, not just the fitting. The flux will bubble when it's hot enough.
    • Touch the solder to the pipe, not the flame. It should melt and flow into the joint by capillary action.
    • Don't overheat; copper can change color and lose strength if overheated.
Compression Fittings:
  • Installation: Ensure the pipe end is clean and cut squarely. Tighten the nut by hand first, then use a wrench for a final half-turn or until snug. Over-tightening can damage the fitting or pipe.
Safety Considerations:
  • PPE: Wear safety glasses when cutting or soldering. Use heat-resistant gloves for soldering to protect against burns.
  • Ventilation: When soldering, work in well-ventilated areas or use fans to dissipate fumes. If indoors, ensure proper ventilation or use fume extractors.
Maintenance and Repair:
  • Leaks: If there's a leak in a soldered joint, you might need to heat it up again and add more solder. For compression fittings, check for tightness or replace the ferrule if it's damaged.
  • Corrosion: While rare, if you notice green patina or corrosion, it might be due to improper installation or exposure to certain chemicals. Advise on protective measures like painting or using compatible materials for connections.
General Tips:
  • Stock Control: Keep copper stored in a dry place to avoid oxidation. Label different types or sizes for quick selection.
  • Client Education: Inform clients about the benefits of copper but also the need for professional installation to ensure longevity and efficiency.

Remember, working with copper requires patience and precision. Our goal is to create systems that are not only functional but also stand the test of time. Let's keep up our reputation for quality work with every copper installation we undertake.
